On Wednesday October21st 2015, the “Back To The Future Day”, I set out on a journey. Not to Hill Valley California, but to the Excelsior Hotel Ernst Colonia. There was a special Californian actor and musician waiting for me. No, not Michael Fox. Much better: Kyle Gass.
I don’t want to leave unmentioned, that he is well known from TV shows like„Seinfeld“ or „Friends“ and had already over 50 series and film appearances. But at this day it was about Kyle as a musician. Usually on the road as the acoustic guitarist and flutist of Tenacious D he is on Europe tour with his own band, The Kyle Gass Band (KGB), at present.
For me it was a great honor to get an interview with him at all. Usually the interviews take place between sound check and gig, but at the evening before I received the call “Kyle wants you to see unhurriedly in his hotel.” Bingo! Foolishly, while I was already sitting in the train, I noticed that I had forgotten my headphones. What should I do? I bought some new.
So I reached the hotel fully equipped and in time. One call, “The guy for Whilethe interview is here” and I was led to his room. While I was building up my equipment, Kyle took my new headphones. “Why should you wear them?”, he said. He liked the sound of them and my recorder. This was more important then that I could hear what I was recording. He did this in such a likeable way that I had to agree. But listen for yourself; I didn’t cut this part out.

I can tell you, that we were hanging around in his room for a while after the interview. The talk we have had then, was almost better than the interview itself.
Am Mittwoch, den 21.10.2015 – dem Back To The Future Day – machte ich mich auf die Reise. Nicht nach Hill Valley California, sondern in das „Excelsior Hotel Ernst“ in Colonia. Dort wartete ein besonderer kalifornischer Schauspieler und Musiker auf mich. Nein, nicht Michael J. Fox, sondern viel besser: Kyle Gass.
Ich möchte nicht unerwähnt lassen, dass man ihn aus TV-Serien wie „Seinfeld“ oder „Friends“ kennt und er schon über 50 Serien und Filmauftritte vorweisen kann. An diesem Tag ging es aber um Kyle als Musiker. Normalerweise als Rhythmus Gitarrist und der Flöte bei Tenacious D. Unterwegs, ist er zurzeit mit seiner eigenen Gruppe, der Kyle Gass Band – KGB – auf Europa Tour.
Für mich war es schon eine große Ehre, überhaupt ein Gespräch mit ihm zu bekommen. Eigentlich finden die Interviews zwischen Soundcheck und Gig statt, doch am Abend davor kam der Anruf: „Kyle möchte Dich in Ruhe in seinem Hotel treffen.“ Bingo! Dumm nur, wenn man schon im Zug sitzend feststellt, dass man seinen Kopfhörer zu Hause vergessen hat. Was soll man schon tun? Man kauft sich einen Neuen.
So kam ich dann doch noch voll ausgestattet und pünktlich in seiner Nobelherberge an. Ein Anruf: „Der Kerl für das Interview ist da“ und ich wurde zum Zimmer geführt. Als ich mein Equipment aufbaute, gefiel ihm direkt mein neuer Kopfhörer. „Warum sollst Du den auf haben“, sagte er. Schwupp war ich ihn erst mal los. Für Kyle war es wichtiger, ein wenig seiner Stimme zu frönen, als das ich die Aufnahme abhören konnte. Aber hört selbst, ich habe die Stelle nicht heraus geschnitten.
Ich kann Euch noch verraten, dass wir noch ein Weilchen zusammen auf seinem Zimmer abgehangen haben und diese Unterhaltung fast besser war, als das Interview.
